Title chasing sydney shut out roar woes against newcastle

Moses Young makes it 6-4 to lead Sydney to 1-0 win on Tuesday night

Tigers have four more game to fill as the bye week approaches

Dame Sally Hawkins has revealed the club's 'giant' goal celebration was a thing of beauty as the Hawks fought to overcome a 3-1 first-half deficit.

Fittingly for a team looking to rebuild under interim manager Tony Archer, after a 3-1 win over a resurgent Geelong, the Tigers were not content with their first attempt at celebration.

And in a performance not too far from the one they displayed at Etihad Stadium against Collingwood, they could have finished the game as early as half-time.

The Tigers began the game with another defensive maul, having gone two-and-half months without conceding a penalty.

But the Eagles were more than a match for the Tigers in the final quarter. The Eagles started the second half with a series of dangerous, aggressive runs up the ground to the goal line but the Hawks were able to move the ball out of trouble.

They kicked two goals to the visitors' two in the final quarter to move the total to six, meaning their season has ended in a manner similar to last season when they were swept by the Western Bulldogs by 50 points.

Tigers captain and first-year coach Jay Schulz told the media after the game: "It's the worst feeling, and we've had some bad losses this year, but our team has never had to let it go in games."

Tigers have a five-week bye and will return to the Sydney Cricket Ground on Tuesday morning for a game against Greater Western Sydney, starting at 12.30pm.

Coach Steve Johnson said: "We haven't had a moment that feels easy in a long time.

"It's a big week for us with two weeks off before we come back.

"We have plenty of work to do this week, but we've got five weeks off and we have got our work in. We have to be tough.

"We have a five-week bye, which will really help us with the time off."

The win was the first for the Hawks since they beat Port Adelaide in round two, but they have also won four of their last five games, scoring 29 goals.
